NCAA LaCrosse
Navy UPSETS #4 North Carolina
Will play next round at USNA on 5/17/08
May 10, 2008 - CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Tim Paul scored a career-high four goals, to lead Navy (10-5) to a thrilling 8-7 upset victory over #4 seed North Carolina (8-6) in the first round of the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament Saturday night. The Tar Heels are the highest seeded team Navy has defeated in the NCAA Tournament since 1981 when the Mids upset #3 seed Army, 16-8.
"The game went the way it needed to go for us to win," said Navy head coach Richie Meade. "Our defense played outstanding, specifically our goalie Tommy Phelan. I felt like our offense was opportunistic and disciplined. I'm thankful that we were able to win the game tonight."
The game was a back-and-forth affair with huge momentum swings on both sides. Navy dominated play for most of the first half, jumping out to a 4-1 lead on two goals by Paul and a goal each by Zack Schroeder and Gregory Clement.
Clement's goal came with 3:33 left in the second quarter and, after winning the faceoff, it looked like the Mids would go into the locker room with at least a three goal lead. Navy, however, would turn the ball over twice on unforced errors and the Tar Heels responded with goals by Gavin Petracca with 1:52 left and Nick Tintle with 54 seconds remaining to cut Navy's lead to 4-3 at the intermission.
The Tar Heels continued their momentum at the start of the third quarter as Petracca scored his second goal of the game just 36 seconds in to tie the game at four. The game did not stay tied for long as 2:16 later Paul put Navy back up for good at 5-4 off an assist from Patrick Moran and then scored his fourth goal of the game on an unassisted goal four minutes later to make it 6-4. Terence Higgins completed Navy's run with an unassisted goal off a wild scramble for a loose ball at the 6:39 mark to make it 7-4. The goal for Higgins was his first since last year's NCAA Tournament game against North Carolina.
Carolina would answer right back with a goal by Petracca, his third goal of the game, with 13:17 remaining to make it 7-5 and then Bart Wagner pulled the Tar Heels to within one at 7-6 with 7:32 left.
After Wagner's goal, Navy would win the ensuing faceoff, but quickly lost the ball on a Thomas Zimmerman turnover. Zimmerman's errant pass was picked off by Jack Ryan, who turned to throw a pass behind the goal to Tar Heel goalie Grant Zimmerman.
Navy's Nick Mirabito stepped in front of Ryan's pass, picking it off at point blank range, and turned and fired the ball into the empty net to give Navy an 8-6 lead with 5:14 left.
North Carolina made one final run at the Mids as Ben Hunt, Carolina's leading goal scorer, netted his first goal of the game with 44 seconds left to make it 8-7. The Tar Heels won the faceoff and got off three shots against a stout Navy defense, but none came close to scoring. Carolina's last shot was a desperation heave by Hunt as the clock struck 0:00 and the Navy team stormed the field in celebration.
Phelan was sensational in goal for the Mids, making 12 saves, several from point blank range. The Navy defense forced 12 Carolina turnovers and forced the Tar Heels into a dreadful 14 of 26 on clears.
"Looking into the seniors' eyes after losing to Colgate and seeing how disappointed they were, there was no way I could let them go out that way," said Phelan. "I did everything I could do to get back home and play again. It wasn't for me, it was for them (the seniors)."
"This may have been the best game of Tommy's career," said Meade. "He played against a very skilled offensive team and he was crucial in us winning tonight."
The win by the Mids is their first NCAA Tournament win since defeating Delaware, 9-7, in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament, while Carolina lost an NCAA Tournament game at home for just the third time in school history (13-3).

NEWS FROM THE YARD Ten Mids Named to CWPA All-Academic Team
Excerpts from a NavySports Article 4 APR 08
" ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Highlighted by senior Eric Gardiner's and freshman Alex Buck's 4.00 GPAs, the Navy water polo team was well-represented on the 2007 CWPA All-Academic Team, released by the conference office recently. Ten Mids were named to either the outstanding (3.71 to 4.00 GPA), superior (3.40 to 3.70 GPA) or excellent (3.20 to 3.39 GPA) teams. In addition, the squad was
one of seven teams to earn an All-Academic Team Award, boasting an overall GPA of 2.80.
Eric Gardiner, a senior from Upland, Calif., is perhaps Navy's most-accomplished
water polo player in the classroom in school history. Boasting a 4.00 GPA in
comparative politics, Gardiner was recently awarded a prestigious NCAA
Post-Graduate Scholarship (one of two water polo players nationally).
Following the fall semester, he ranked first in the senior class on the
Academic Order of Merit and fourth on the Military Order of Merit. He
received a prestigious Marshall Scholarship for graduate study in the United
Kingdom for two years. Starting in September, he will be studying at Queen's
University in Belfast, pursuing a Master of Arts Degree in Terrorism,
Violence and Security. Following a year at Queen's, Gardiner plans to study
a second year at either Cambridge or Oxford, pursuing a degree in
international relations. Gardiner received a Special Warfare (SEALs) service
selection, and after his graduate education in the United Kingdom, will head
to Coronado, Calif., to go through BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition
School) training.
Gardiner appeared in 31 games with eight starts for the Midshipmen this past
fall. He finished the season with 19 points (10 g, 9 a) and ended his career
with 41 points (27 g, 14 a), helping Navy to the last two NCAA Tournaments.
Alex Buck, a freshman from Lisle, Ill., owns a 4.00 GPA in aerospace engineering.
He appeared in 15 games last fall, scoring six points (4 g, 2 a).
Three players were named to the superior team (3.40 to 3.70 GPA), headlined
by senior goalie George Naughton. The Deerfield Beach, Fla., native set
school records in career and single-season saves and was an All-League
performer as a senior and an All-American as a junior. Naughton owns a 3.47
GPA in international relations.
Naughton is joined on the team by Nick Mansfield (So. / Rockford, Mich.;
3.45 GPA in quantitative economics) and Dominic Valentini (So. / San Rafael,
Calif.; 3.42 GPA in mechanical engineering).
Five players were named to the excellent team (3.20 to 3.39). Sophomore Joe
Moffit (Coronado, Calif.) led the way with a 3.37 GPA in English. He was
joined by Luke Baldwin (Fr. / La Grange Park, Ill.; 3.31 GPA in economics),
Zack Anderson (So. / Cockeysville, Md.; 3.30 GPA in ocean engineering),
Steve Craney (Sr. / La Crescenta, Calif.; 3.29 GPA in applied physics) and
Justin Stevens (So. / Boca Raton, Fla.; 3.26 GPA in aerospace engineering)."
Special congratulations to fellow member USNA.org parents, the
Gardiners, the Bucks, the Baldwins, the Craneys, the Stevens' and the
Valentinis for raising such outstanding sons!!

Maryland Parents Club Offers FIRST SALUTE 2008 American Eagle Silver Dollars
Annapolis, MD - January 17, 2008 The USNA Parents and Sponsors Club of Maryland, Inc. has made a bulk purchase of 2008 American Eagle .999 Fine Silver Dollar coins for Commissioning 2008 and is offering them for sale to Parents on a first come - first served basis. All 2008 USNA Parents are invited to purchase one or more by filling out the Order Form.
The tradition of the “First Salute” originates in the late 19th Century when Midshipmen were paid an extra dollar each month, which in turn, was paid to the senior enlisted (Non-Commissioned Officer or NCO) in charge of their training. When the payment was later made directly to the senior NCO, it became tradition for each newly Commissioned Officer to pay their senior NCO a dollar upon rendering him their First Salute.
Newly Commissioned Officers, therefore, pay for their first salute and from that point on, are expected to earn each salute that they receive.
Please use the attached order form if you are interested in purchasing one or more 2008 Silver Dollars. The Maryland Club uses the proceeds from this sale to assist in funding the Midshipman Home Football Game Tailgates.
Each coin is sealed in a protective plastic case.

New Book by USNA.org Member
Building a Midshipman How to crack the Naval Academy Application
by Jacqui Murray - Parent (Class of 2008)
You don't have to be a miracle worker to be one of the 10% of applicants who lands a spot in one of the four military academies, but you do need a plan... For the thousands of students who apply every year for West Point, the US Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy and the Coast Guard Academy and slog through the mind numbing concatenation of decisions preceding an appointment, there is no greater intimidation than the likely event that they will try but fail.
This is the true story of how one All-American kid succeeded. She had no idea she could aim so high and succeed so succinctly.
This book will walk you through the long process, give you cheat sheets for making sure you do everything required, and the moral support when you wonder why you're spending all your time on a seemingly hopeless endeavor. It's bound in a convenient 3 Ring Binder so you can add your submittals and information as you collect it.
Jacqui Murray, the author, has been a member of USNA.org since before her daughter's I-Day in 2004.
This is a great resource for Blue and Gold Officers and parents with children attempting the application process. Even those doing it for a second or third sibling.

Baltimore, MD - December 1, 2007 - Under clear December skies with temps in the 40's, Army (3-8) met Navy (7-4) for the 108th playing of this famous inter-Academy rivalry between the Army Black Knights and the Navy Midshipmen before 70,008 fans at a sold out M&T Bank Stadium. The noon kick off followed a FlyOver of 4 F/A 18 Super Hornets from Strike Fighter Squadron 137, NAS Lemoore, California, piloted by Naval Academy Grads: Lt. Cmdr. Dave "Frosty" Snowden, USNA '96, Lt. Colin "Farva" Price, USNA '01, Lt. Rebekah "Charlie" Murphy, USNA '02, and Lt. Jason "Doofus" Duffie, USNA '02.
The Navy Midshipmen came into this game with Navy ahead (51-49-7) and scored first on a touchdown run by Zerbin Singleton on Navy's second possession. Army followed with a Field Goal in the Second Quarter.
Navy's CBS All Star of the Game, Reggie Campbell then returned Army's kick off 98 yards for Navy's second touchdown of the game. It was followed with another touchdown by Sean White and a Joey Bullen career long 51 Yard Field Goal to make the score 34 - 3 at halftime. A scoreless 3rd quarter was followed by another Reggie Campbell touchdown in the 4th and then a 2 yard touchdown run by back up Quarterback Jarod Bryant to finish the 4th quarter scoring. Navy was driving for yet another score under the direction of QB Troy Goss when Navy allowed time to run out with the ball at the Army 4 Yard line. Final Score - Navy 38 Army 3.
This marks Navy's sixth straight victory in the Army Navy contest (the most consecutive victories by either side in the history of the game). It gives Navy's Coach Johnson a lifetime record of 6-0 against Army and makes this year's senior class the third straight class that has never lost to Army. Navy ends regular season play at 8 & 4 with Army ending at 3 & 9. Congratulations to Navy on this awesome win.
Navy will play next in the 2007 BCS Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego on December 20th.
GO NAVY - BEAT ARMY!!!!

Veterans' Day 2007 We honor those who serve today, Those who have served before,
and those who have given their all.
VETERANS' DAY
America is a nation that many of us take for granted. The freedom, liberties, and opportunities that have drawn people from around the world since the Declaration of Independence was written is something that people read about in textbooks and never comprehend. Voting, football on Sundays, graduations, weddings, anniversaries are things that Americans consider the natural order of life. Many Americans seem oblivious to the fact that there are extraordinarily evil people in the world who will do their utmost to disrupt our way of life, and that the only thing keeping the horrors at bay is a thin line of young men and women who are prepared to sacrifice themselves for our way of life. My grandfathers and uncles served their time in the line and I serve to honor their sacrifices and hope that I will not let them down or disappoint them on my watch.
We do not ask for praise or recognition, thanks, or your pity. We apologize if we make you uncomfortable or uneasy when we are around. We know that we are reminders of a world best not thought about. We ask simply for understanding. People talk about the finest America has to offer and I will tell you that it is not in any classroom or university or athletic program. It is the young faces around me, where throwing 85 pounds of body armor on to go out in 120 degree heat is a normal thing, where air conditioning is a bonus, who are willing to go outside the wire again and again with jokes and a grin on their faces. Who have all seen and experienced events that no person should ever want to see even in a movie or a video game. We are the sentinels, who let you sleep at night because we are on watch, and we will do great harm to anyone who threatens us, our friends, and our way of life. When you are sitting down with your family and friends for Thanksgiving, we will be thinking of you before we saddle up for the next mission, when you tuck your children and grandchildren into bed, we are patrolling down a dusty trash filled street that the world has forgotten about. In that cold hour that is not night or dawn, where evil lurks and it is the killing time, we will be there.
Between deployments, I went to the San Diego Zoo with some friends. As we were leaving, there was a live band playing at the Zoo exit, clustered around the band was a group of families from across America, and the kids, 3,4,5,6 years old were dancing with each other and their parents to the music. The simple innocence and joy in their faces made me cry. That is why I serve.

THE STREAK IS BROKEN 11-3-2007
South Bend, IN The Losing Streak that has stood since Roger Staubach quarterbacked the Midshipmen in 1963 to their last win in 43 years, ended at the hands of the Midshipmen in South Bend Saturday, Novembr 3rd. The Triple Overtime match ended with the Mids holding the Irish as they attempted the needed two point coversion that would have tied the score and sent the game in to a fourth overtime.
Congratulations to the team, coaches and to the entire Brigade on winning. Now on to N. Texas, N. Illinois and ARMY! Go Navy!!! Beat 'em all!!!

Did YOU Do This?
The City of Annapolis Needs Our Help
Every Home Football Game means a Parade of the Brigade of Midshipmen
from T-Court to the Stadium via Taylor Avenue. And every parade brings out
droves of Parents and spectators who insist on violating the local Litter Ordinance by throwing
candy and treats at the passing Midshipmen. Unfortunately, most of the candy
ends up being dropped and trampled into the street.
The local street department is forced to spend many man-hours each Monday following
a game weekend sweeping up the candy, scraping off gum, taffy and other sticky/chewy
treats and cleaning up the mess created by well intended spectators at the parade.
Many believe tossing the treats is a tradition. It's not. It is
a health and safety hazard. It presents an attractive nuisance to children
who try to collect the dropped candy. It also attracts vermin before it can be cleaned up.
We ask our members to do their part in stopping this dangerous practice. Instead,
pass out the candy in the stadium to the Mids or give the treats to Mids to
distribute within their companies or pass it out as the Mids leave after the game.
As Parents of Midshipmen and guests in Annapolis, we have an obligation to set a good example by cheering
on our sons and daughters as they pass in parade and to be good citizens by not
contributing to this continuing problem for the City of Annapolis.

HERNDON 2006 1 Hour 14 Minutes 13 Seconds
New Record Time set by the Class of 2009
Brian Richards, 3rd Company, was supported by his fellow Classmates long enough to remove the Plebe Dixie Cup Cover from the top of the 21' Herndon Monument and replace it with a Midshipman's Cover, thus officially ending Plebe year for the Class of 2009 in record time. The previous record of 1h 16m 13s was held by the Class of 2008 who stood by helplessly as this Plebe Class completed the Herndon Climb in the least time since the monument was first greased to make the task more difficult.
The new record, however, may have an asterisk beside it in the Official Record Book because, whether by new regulation, accident or design, the Dixie Cup this year did not appear to be affixed to the top of the Monument with the usual 4' of Duct Tape.
Congratulations to the Class of 2009! Plebes No More!

We've MOVED!!!
Announcing our NEW EMAIL ADDRESSES...
It's been months in the making but we have finally completed our move to our new web server at www.USNA.org.
Why did we move? For the same reasons that most folks move... More space, a chance to renovate, and because the new neighborhood insures our continued growth and improved service to our members and USNA. We might also add "better schools" but there is no better school than USNA.
What's it mean to our members? A faster, more reliable web presence; expanded services in our Photo Gallery, Parents' Handbook, Classified Ads; and more space in which to host Parent's Club Web Sites. But best of all, it means that all of our listserv addresses are now easier than ever to remember...
